Choosing doors for the Kerala climate

Humidity, monsoon and coastal air decide more door specifications in Kerala than aesthetics do. What actually holds up.

A door that performs in a dry climate can fail in Kerala for reasons that have nothing to do with how it was made. Sustained humidity, a monsoon that drives water horizontally, and salt air within a few kilometres of the coast are three separate loads, and they attack different parts of a doorset.

Why width is the enemy of solid timber

Timber moves across the grain with moisture content. The wider the piece, the more it moves — which is why a wide single-piece traditional door will cup or bind in a Kerala season while a narrow one behaves.

Engineered construction addresses this directly. A rail-and-stile framework with an engineered infill distributes the movement across many small pieces instead of concentrating it in a few large ones. That is the whole reason the wooden range is built the way it is, and why the catalogue claims engineered stability with minimal warping rather than claiming timber does not move.

The Solid Panel range applies the same logic to a traditional appearance: individual finger-jointed and edge-glued panels, precision-joined, rather than one wide board pretending to be stable.

Where water actually gets in

Not through the face. Through the edges, the bottom rail and the junction between frame and wall.

That makes edge sealing the decisive specification detail for any wet or exposed opening. The laminate range uses PVC edge banding to close the core on every side — the reason the catalogue states it for humid environments specifically.

The main entrance is a different problem

An external main door faces driven rain, direct sun and, near the coast, chloride-laden air. It is also the opening a termite reaches first.

The steel range answers that by removing timber from the leaf altogether: aluminium front panels, zinc-aluminium alloy frames and back panels, and anti-corrosion fluorocarbon surface coatings. A double-layer stainless-steel threshold is fitted across the whole range, which is the detail that matters where water sits.

A practical specification pattern

Steel at the main entrance. Laminate to bathrooms, utility areas and any coastal-facing opening. Veneer or solid panel to the principal internal rooms. All of it from one supplier so the frames and architraves match through the transitions, and all of it under one warranty — eleven years structural, five years finish.

Still deciding?

Get swatches in your hand before you specify.

We will send physical finish samples plus an edge or section sample, so you can judge the surface and the banding rather than take a page’s word for it.

Common questions

Do engineered doors last as long as solid teak?
They are engineered to hold their geometry better, which in a humid climate is usually what determines service life. Doorzzen warrants the structural integrity of the door system for eleven years and the finish for five.
Is a steel door necessary for the main entrance?
Not necessary — but for an exposed external opening in a coastal or high-rainfall location it removes several failure modes at once. Both options are available from the same supplier under the same warranty.
